Abstract

Static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) are increasingly implemented in power systems. Moreover, cascaded multilevel converters (CMC) are more frequently taken in consideration because of their strong capabilities. In this paper, the design and simulation of a multilevel STATCOM for voltage regulation of load is presented. Design of the passive components, active and reactive power controller, and balancer of capacitor voltage are parts of proposed system design. The pole placement method was used for the design of the controller. Simulation results with MATLAB/SIMULINK show good performance of voltage regulation in full load and dynamic load conditions.

Design the Optimal Number of Components in a Grid-Connected Hybrid Power Generation System

Abstract

Hybrid power generation systems are an effective solution for the variable generated power of renewable energy resources. In this paper, a grid-connected hybrid power generation system including wind turbines, solar panels, wave generators and power storage batteries for a village in the Chabahar Bay in southeastern of Iran is optimally designed. The purpose of selecting this region is to investigate the economic feasibility of using wave generators in hybrid power generation systems. In the design, during various operating scenarios simulated with Homer software, adding power generation resources to the village will provide part of the required power locally, which will reduce the cost of purchasing electricity from the power grid, and even profitability is also achieved with the sale of electricity to the power grid. On the other hand, the reliability of power grid is improved in terms of the Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) index.

Maximum Wind Energy Extraction by Using Neural Network Estimation and Predictive Control of Boost Converter

Abstract

The power generation from wind turbine are variable because of dependence on environmental conditions and it is important to extract maximum energy from wind. This paper proposes a new method to extract maximum energy from wind turbine systems. The artificial neural network (ANN) is used to estimate the wind speed based on the rotor speed and the output power. In addition to ANN, a predictive controller is used to maximize the efficiency of the boost converter. In predictive controller, duty cycle of boost converter is controlled to obtain the maximum power point based on the slope method. One of the most interesting advantages of this controller is simplicity of control and implementation that is leads to fast response and exact tracking. The method has been developed and analyzed by utilizing a turbine directly driven permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The simulation results verify the performance of the proposed method. Results show that this method maximizes wind energy extraction with more accuracy and fastness.
